Recognizing Signs of Illness in Your Newborn

Your little one is vulnerable because their immune system hasn't had enough exposure and time to develop fully. For this reason, an issue can quickly go from mild to severe. At Island Pediatrics of Honolulu, serving Honolulu, HI, and the nearby region, pediatrician Dr. Jenny Welham is available for treatment. Still, you need to know the signs of an illness to watch out for, which requires a newborn care sick visit.

Has a Fever

A fever is the body's natural defense mechanism against viruses and bacteria. The body heats to kill these harmful invaders. That said, an infection could mean your infant is battling an infection. The appropriate care can ward off serious complications, including dehydration.

Generally, a fever is a temperature of 100.4 or higher when you take your child's temperature rectally. On the other hand, if your little one has a temperature of 99 or higher when you take it under the armpit, that signifies a fever.

Won't Stop Crying

As your newborn's main method of communication with you, it's normal for your little one to cry when hungry, want to feel close to you or have a dirty diaper. Some infants cry more than others. However, if your little one is normally not a major crier and is crying incessantly, it's a cause for concern.

Has Diarrhea or Is Throwing Up

If your infant is frequently throwing up or has diarrhea, that's not stopping; it's a sign something is wrong. It could mean your little one has an infection. They could be reacting to the type of formula you're feeding them. In breastfed children, these symptoms could occur as a reaction to something you ate.

It's vital to get to the source of the problem and stop the symptoms early. Dehydration can be serious, and it doesn't take long to happen in a little one with less blood than an adult.

Therefore, contact our Honolulu, HI, pediatrician if your little one is experiencing these. One or both symptoms that aren't going away could warrant a sick visit to newborn care.

Is Refusing to Eat

Your child must eat every so many hours to ensure they receive the nutrients and fluid needed. If your newborn refuses multiple feedings in a row, it could suggest they're sick or experiencing another issue. Either way, treatment is necessary to prevent complications.

Island Pediatrics of Honolulu, serving Honolulu, HI, and the surrounding area, has Dr. Welham, who can help whenever you need a newborn care sick visit. It's important to know the signs when it's necessary.
