Telehealth vs. In-Person Visits: Choosing the Right Option for Your Child

Dr. Jenny Welham and Island Pediatrics of Honolulu, HI, want your child to get the most out of their healthcare. But sometimes, the best thing for your child is to stay home when they’re sick. Telehealth’s popularity increases more and more with each year. But when should you call in, and when should you come in for a visit?

When to Come In

There are a few circumstances that demand you see a doctor face-to-face. The first is if you need something from a doctor that you can’t get for yourself. Certified medical practitioners should administer vaccines. You should also see Dr. Welham in person for injuries such as sprains or breaks. When your child is sick and you want to gauge the severity, there are a couple of ways to determine whether you should come into our clinic in Honolulu, HI, or use telehealth.

If your child has a fever over 100 degrees that doesn't come down with treatment, you need to see us. If the fever lasts for a few days, come in even if the fever is below 100 degrees or comes down temporarily with medicine. Symptoms that last for days and don’t seem to improve may need our help. Your kid might need antibiotics or some other prescription medication.

When Is Telehealth Best?

Telehealth offers two benefits: It keeps your child out of the hospital and away from other sick people and it allows more flexibility. One of the major times to use telehealth is to follow up with Dr. Welham. If you were told at the initial appointment that there was a chance the treatment wouldn’t work, then a simple phone call might be all you need to switch your child’s medication. If you know your child isn’t seriously ill but can’t attend school, a quick call can sometimes be enough to get the necessary work and school paperwork to excuse the absence.

Telehealth is a great option for when you have multiple children under your care. You shouldn’t have to choose between caring for your sick child and caring for the healthy ones. Finally, telehealth is great for the times when you aren’t sure which option would be better. We can always have you come into the clinic if it’s clear your child needs a face-to-face.
