Feeding Guidelines

When raising a newborn, knowing how to feed them is important. During these early days of existence, a strong and consistent diet will ensure that they grow and mature quickly. Like all babies, yours will need to feed regularly (multiple times a day) and will need you to pay close attention to their needs. Here are a few things to keep in mind as your baby matures:

  • Don’t give solid foods to your baby until you’re told to do so by your physician or when they’re four months old
  • Focus on breast milk or formula because these provide your baby with the nutrients that they need to mature
  • Feed them using a bottle because your baby isn’t able to eat from a spoon yet and may spill any food you give them
  • Make sure you ask us about vitamin D, as your baby needs at least 400 IU every day: there are special formulas that can help with this
  • Give a one-month baby 2-4 ounces of formula at least 6-8 times every day to help them develop properly
  • Feed a two-month baby 5-6 ounces of formula at least 5-6 times every day to keep up with their nutritional needs
  • Provide a 3-5 month baby with 6-7 ounces of formula at least 5-6 times a day to ensure that your little one is properly fed
  • Expect at least five wet diapers every day from your baby, whether you’re breastfeeding or giving them formula

At Island Pediatrics of Honolulu, our team can help you understand how to properly feed your baby. Dr. Welham will sit down with you and provide the dietary/nutrition guidance that Honolulu, HI mothers like you need. As importantly, we can ensure you’re not making any mistakes that could adversely affect your little one’s overall health and well-being.

Tips for Feeding

  • Once you move to solid foods, give only one teaspoon at each feeding
  • Avoid any foods with nitrates (spinach, green beans, beets, squash, carrots) until six months
  • Wash, peel, and de-seed all fruits before feeding
  • Only give your baby cow’s milk after they hit 12 months
